| Decisions Versus
Implementation |
|
In any management system there are two fundamental responsibilities. 1.)
is to make decisions and 2.) is to implement the decisions. |
|
In a "Virtual Management" System the decision making process must be distributed
throughout the organization. It must include all relevant components of
the organization. In addition to traditional managers, employees, suppliers,
joint venture partners, and of course, customers will be involved in the
decision making processes. |
|
The hierarchical pyramid model is no longer adequate. It is recognized
that no single individual has the knowledge or skill set to even begin
to make all of the requisite decisions for the company. |
|
Once decisions have been made implementation processes must be in place
to ensure the processes which result from the decision making are implemented
properly. This means the necessary resources and methodologies must be
available. This includes capital, equipment, human resources, appropriate
training, processes and procedures. |
|
The management of the process will generally reside with a process leader
and various participants of the process. Management, in this sense, is
distributed throughout the organization since the processes are themselves
what comprise the organization. |
|
The problem that then arises is, "How one can achieve 'good decision' making
in a virtually managed organization where the management is distributed
throughout the organization?" After all, in our traditional model, managers
are trained over long periods of time to make "good decisions" and non-managers
are generally considered incapable of making decisions due to lack of proper
training or knowledge. |
