Holistic Versus Holographic
A biological model that is holographic in nature is probably the most appropriate metaphor for a QPI organization.
It should be clear from the above discussion that a very holistic approach to decision making is involved in a QPI System.. The emphasis on long-term and global effects, recognizing interconnectedness and non-linear effects, and keeping processes under control is all very holistic in its approach.
What should be emphasized is that in a properly functioning QPI Management System there is no one central decision maker. The decision making is effectively distributed throughout the organization.
It is true that certain decisions will require input from what might be traditionally called "top management". In a QPI organization "top management" is management that has the most global and long-term viewpoint.
Before decisions are made it may sometimes be necessary for the managers with the most global and long-term views to have an input in that decision. Even so, 90 - 98% of the work involved in making the decision can still be done at a more local level and it is only then passed to the global managers for a final overview.
This type of distributed decision making can be thought of as holographic in nature.
A hologram is a way of storing information that is distributed throughout the entire hologram. In other words, if you remove part of the hologram you still retain the global knowledge, but it just becomes somewhat fuzzy or less clear.
The understanding of the mission of the company needs to be distributed in a holographic manner throughout the organization. An understanding of the strategy of the company needs to be distributed in a holographic manner.
Information is often distributed in a holographic manner. That is, all components of the organization have access to all of the information, but to the level of precision required by each one. The information required by the decision making processes needs to be distributed in a holographic manner as it will be needed in a QPI decision making structure.
Whereas a traditional management system's model is a pyramid with a ladder-type structure, a model for a QPI Virtual Management System is more like a biological organism with a holographic structure. It can be argued that every part of a biological organism has some knowledge of the whole organism and of all other parts in some holographic sense.
There is a theory today of the universe, a new paradigm called the Holographic Universe, which tends to integrate both scientific concepts and metaphysical concepts.
A QPI System is more akin to a hologram or a biological organism. In a biological organism you can not say that one particular local part is more important than another. Which is more important to you - your heart, lungs, kidneys, or brain? Of course, the answer is that none of them can exist without the healthy functioning of all the others. If any one local part suffers, the global suffers and all other local parts suffers.
Would you give up your heart to save your kidneys? I think the answer is obviously no. You have to have both.
In a QPI organization it is the same type of situation. All parts are important. They are all interconnected and the health of the entire organization is dependent upon the health of each local unit as the health of each local unit is dependent upon the health of the entire organization.
